Actress Mayim Bialik, best known for her roles in "Beaches", "Blossom" and "The Big Bang Theory", received The MTV (Media and Torah Values) Challenge Award on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at the UTJ’s annual dinner in Teaneck, N.J. The award recognizes professionals in the electronic media who incorporate their Jewish values openly into their work.
The MTV Challenge was first developed by the Union for Traditional Judaism in the late 1990’s (about the time Ms. Bialik was starring in “Blossom”). The curriculum has evolved greatly, from videocassettes to digital DVD and web-based, and is used in hundreds of venues around the world. Through a grant from the Targum Shlishi foundation, the UTJ in September released the fourth DVD volume of the MTV Challenge. Today the “Taking the MTV Challenge” curriculum - which includes video clips from TV as well as fully developed lesson plans - continues to help participants ages 13 through adult evaluate the messages of the electronic media through the lens of classical Jewish texts.
UTJ is thrilled to have Mayim Bialik as a new member of the MTV Challenge Team. Ms. Bialik will be helping us create the fifth volume with three new segments. The details of these segments will be announced soon and Ms. Bialik will be featured prominently in them.
