A message from UTJ President Rabbi David Novak on the passing of Rabbi Wilfred Shuchat, Z”L.
Rabbi Wilfred Shuchat passed away on December 27th. He was married to the late Miriam (nee Sochet) and had four children: Margola Shuchat, Elizabeth Shwartz of blessed memory and her husband Rabbi Yakov Schwartz, Bernard Raphael Shuchat, and Bryna and Joshua Landes. He has four grandchildren: Ayalah Schwartz and Arielle, Eli and Daniel Landes. Rabbi Shuchat was together with us from day one in 1983 when we founded the Union for Traditional Judaism, and when we founded Morashah: The Association of Traditional Rabbis. He was a founding Vice President of the Union for Traditional Judaism and a founding board member of our Metivta. We worked together to preserve the type of Judaism we learned at the Jewish Theological Seminary under the inspired leadership of the late Professor Louis Finkelstein, and of such greats as the late Professors Saul Lieberman and Abraham Joshua Heschel, the late Rabbi Isaac Klein, and (yibadel le-hayyim) Professor David Weiss Halivni.
May God comfort the family, and all of us, his friends and colleagues, on our inestimable loss. May God enable all of us to continue Rabbi Shuchat’s good and noble work in the vineyard of the Lord.
