UTJ Announces Membership Meeting on Sunday, September 14

Dear UTJ Members and Supporters:

We are at a very exciting moment in UTJ’s history as we work to solidify our recent growth by implementing a new system of UTJ leadership and governance.  As such, we are pleased to invite you to Join UTJ for 5786 and to participate in our Membership meeting on Sunday, September 14th at 10AM Eastern time / 5 PM Israel time via Zoom.

The meeting will be an opportunity to learn more about – and discuss – UTJ’s current and planned initiatives.  In addition, we will formally vote on new bylaws and a proposed slate for our Board of Directors.

In advance of the meeting, we’d like to give you a brief update on UTJ’s current work.

First, we are pleased to share with you the publication of Divrei HaLev, authored by our esteemed Executive Vice-President Emeritus, Rabbi Ron Price.  Divrei HaLev highlights Rabbi Price’s meaningful conversations with our revered founder, Rabbi David Weiss Halivni ז״ל.  The book goes parsha by parsha and conveys Rabbi Halivni’s incomparable insights.  Also recently published is Siddur Yismah Libeinu, a weekday and Shabbat siddur based on the teachings of Hakham Isaac Sassoon with a masterful English translation by Rabbi Hayyim Solomon.  These and other titles are available from the UTJ Viewpoints bookstore.

UTJ continues to perpetuate Rav Halivni’s time-honored values, codified as follows:

  • Uncompromising intellectual integrity in approaching sacred texts
  • Reverence for tradition while embracing scholarly inquiry
  • Commitment to halakhic Judaism that engages meaningfully with modernity
  • Pursuit of truth through rigorous textual analysis and critical thinking

Our Enduring Impact

The UTJ’s journey reflects these principles through decades of substantive contribution to Jewish thought and practice. From our earliest days in the 1980s, during which we produced scholarly works on halakhic issues through our respected Tomeikh K’Halakha and Cornerstone publications- to today where we have successfully employed digital technology to advance our beliefs and value system.

This tradition of excellence continues into the 2020s with:

  • An expansive calendar of intellectually stimulating webinars and podcasts
  • Vibrant daily engagement across our social media platforms
  • A comprehensive website (www.utj.org) featuring regular contributions from our distinguished rabbinic leadership and scholars

 Our Promising Future

Today, we stand reinvigorated by a new generation of members, volunteers, and leaders who carry forward Rav Halivni’s legacy of intellectual courage and religious authenticity. Together, we continue to forge a path that honors tradition while engaging thoughtfully with the complexities of modern Jewish life.

We look forward to discussing with you our plans for the future, including additional programming and potential course offerings.

Please join us for our membership meeting on Sunday, September 14th at 10AM Eastern time / 5 PM Israel time via Zoom.  In order to attend the meeting, please join UTJ for 5786 and then register for the membership meetingMembers of Morashah, the rabbinic fellowship of UTJ, can renew their Morashah and UTJ memberships at the same time from this form.
