{"id":2956,"date":"2022-04-05T23:34:21","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T03:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utj.org\/viewpoints\/?p=2956"},"modified":"2026-03-01T10:27:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-01T15:27:10","slug":"what-does-the-word-pesach-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utj.org\/viewpoints\/2022\/04\/what-does-the-word-pesach-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"What Does the Word Pesach (\u05e4\u05e1\u05d7) Mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pesach (\u05e4\u05e1\u05d7) is commonly translated as \u201cPassover\u201d and taken to be a reference to God physically \u201cpassing over\u201d the Israelite houses during the slaying of the firstborn.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Saul Lieberman notes in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3w6MqiJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hellenism in Jewish Palestine<\/a><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><u>[1]<\/u><\/a> (page 51) that \u201cthe verb \u05e4\u05e1\u05d7 certainly means to step over, to skip, but from the Prophets the Rabbis proved that it also signified to protect, and their translation makes much better sense of Ex. 12:23.\u201d\u00a0 He notes that in the Septuagint the verb is translated as \u201cprotect\u201d in Ex. 12:13 and 12:27, but as \u201cpass by\u201d in Ex. 13:23.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Nachum Sarna in the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/31tNG1g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JPS Torah Commentary on Exodus<\/a> (12:11) says that \u201cto have compassion\u201d is \u201c[t]he oldest, and apparently the most reliable\u201d understanding of the term, as compared to understandings of \u201cprotect\u201d or \u201cskip over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems to me that the understandings of \u201cprotect\u201d and \u201cto have compassion\u201d are relatively close to each other.\u00a0 Hebrew terms such as \u05d7\u05d5\u05e1 and \u05d7\u05d9\u05d9\u05e1, which we will see used below in comments and translations on the word \u05e4\u05e1\u05d7 )and, by the way, probably relate to the use of lettuce \u2013 \u05d7\u05e1\u05d4 &#8211; at the seder, see e.g. JPS comment on Ex. 12:8) can have both connotations of protection and compassion,<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> and obviously compassion for an individual or group can manifest itself in the form of providing protection to that individual or group. Perhaps there is also little practical difference from the translation \u201cpass over,\u201d as God would have passed over the house out of compassion for and in order to protect the Israelites.\u00a0 Nonetheless, I think there is a significant difference in imagery at least between the \u201cpass over\u201d and \u201cprotect\u201d translations.\u00a0 In the \u201cpass over\u201d translation, God strikes the Egyptians and leaves the Israelites alone.\u00a0 With the \u201cprotect\u201d translation, it seems that God sends out a deadly force and then protects the Israelites from that force.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a selection of verses using the term \u05e4\u05e1\u05d7 as well as rabbinic texts supporting each translation, based on the footnotes to the JPS commentary on Exodus 12:11 and comments of Rabbi Lieberman.\u00a0 Texts are from Bar Ilan Responsa Version 24 unless otherwise noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note: <\/strong>Translations of Targum Yonatan are from J. W. Etheridge (London, 1862), \u00a0which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Targum_Jonathan_on_Exodus.1?lang=bi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available on Sefaria<\/a>.\u00a0 Otherwise, the translations below are my own unless otherwise noted.\u00a0 My translations of Targum Onkelos were significantly assisted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3u9ClQk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">translation by Israel Drazin and Stanley M. and is often used to support the \u201cpass over\u201d translation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isaiah 31:5 \u05d9\u05e9\u05e2\u05d9\u05d4\u05d5 \u05e4\u05e8\u05e7 \u05dc\u05d0 \u05e4\u05e1\u05d5\u05e7 \u05d4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\">\u05db\u05bc\u05b0\u05e6\u05b4\u05e4\u05bc\u05b3\u05e8\u05b4\u05d9\u05dd \u05e2\u05b8\u05e4\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05db\u05bc\u05b5\u05df \u05d9\u05b8\u05d2\u05b5\u05df \u05d9\u05b0\u05e7\u05b9\u05d5\u05b8\u05e7 \u05e6\u05b0\u05d1\u05b8\u05d0\u05d5\u05b9\u05ea \u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05d9\u05b0\u05e8\u05d5\u05bc\u05e9\u05c1\u05b8\u05dc\u05b8\u05b4\u05dd \u05d2\u05bc\u05b8\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05df \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05e6\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05dc \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e1\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7 \u05d5\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05de\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05d8:<\/p>\n<p><em>As birds hover,<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> so will the Lord of Hosts protect Jerusalem; defend and save, \u05e4\u05bc\u05b8\u05e1\u05b9\u05d7\u05b7 and deliver.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This verse is a significant source for the rabbis\u2019 understanding of the term \u05e4\u05e1\u05d7.\u00a0 Here, it cannot mean \u201cto pass over.\u201d Given the other verbs in the sentence, \u201cprotect\u201d is probably the best understanding of \u05e4\u05e1\u05d7 here, though \u201cbe compassionate toward\u201d could work as well.\u00a0 Note that Rashi on Ex. 12:13 (below in the section for texts supporting the translation \u201ccompassion\u201d uses this verse in support of translating \u05d5\u05e4\u05e1\u05d7\u05ea\u05d9 as \u05d5\u05d7\u05de\u05dc\u05ea\u05d9 (\u201c<em>I will have compassion\u201d<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>If we are interested in finding an understanding of \u05e4\u05e1\u05d7 that could fit both 1 Kings 18:21 and Isaiah 31:5, perhaps it is \u201chover over.\u201d\u00a0 Hence, in Kings hovering would serve as a metaphor for vacillating between two positions whereas in Isaiah 31:5 (and in our texts from Exodus 12) hovering would serve as a metaphor for providing protection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>RABBINIC SOURCES SUPPORTING THE TRANSLATION \u201cCOMPASSION\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong>(Per JPS footnote 30)<\/p>\n<p>JPS indicates that the following commentaries support the translation \u201ccompassion,\u201d though I think many of them could just as easily support the translation \u201cprotected,\u201d and, as noted above, I am not sure there is a great difference between these two meanings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Targum Yonatan to Ex. 12:11 \u05ea\u05e8\u05d2\u05d5\u05dd \u05d4\u05de\u05d9\u05d5\u05d7\u05e1 \u05dc\u05d9\u05d5\u05e0\u05ea\u05df &#8211;
