{"id":927,"date":"2017-08-04T13:20:38","date_gmt":"2017-08-04T13:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utj.org\/viewpoints\/?p=927"},"modified":"2018-04-12T12:10:46","modified_gmt":"2018-04-12T12:10:46","slug":"the-principle-of-day-school-universality-reacting-to-an-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utj.org\/viewpoints\/2017\/08\/the-principle-of-day-school-universality-reacting-to-an-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"The Principle of Day School Universality: Reacting to an interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In his <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.timesofisrael.com\/the-principle-of-day-school-universality-reacting-to-an-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Times of Israel blog post<\/a>, Doug Aronin questions why state support for math and science teachers in public schools may not be expected to reduce Jewish day school tuition.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over the last few years, it has often\u00a0seemed like everyone in the Orthodox community has been talking about day school affordability, so Fagin\u2019s mention of the need for tuition relief was hardly surprising.\u00a0 What<em>was<\/em>\u00a0surprising was his implicit acknowledgement that even government subsidies \u2014 often seen as a panacea for affordability \u2014 \u00a0might not be enough to bring tuition costs down.\u00a0 If a school receives some kind of government subsidy to cover part of the cost that it formerly had to bear without government assistance, wouldn\u2019t you expect that to result in\u00a0lower tuition?\u00a0 I can understand a school\u2019s waiting a year or two to make sure, given the vicissitudes of the funding process, that it can count on a particular subsidy continuing on an ongoing basis.\u00a0 But at some point \u2014 sooner rather than later \u2014 one would expect tuition-paying parents to become the primary beneficiaries of such a welcome development.\u00a0 Neither Fagin nor his interviewer, however, appears to share that expectation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his Times of Israel blog post, Doug Aronin questions why state support for math and science teachers in public schools may not be expected to reduce Jewish day school tuition.
