The Open Orthodox rabbi is President & Dean of the Valley Beit Midrash, founder of the social justice organization Uri L’Tzedek, founder and CEO of The Shamayim V’Aretz Institute, the founder & President of YATOM: The Jewish Foster & Adoption Network, and the author of Ten books on Jewish ethics. Newsweek magazine named Rav Shmuly one of the top 50 rabbis in America and the Forward named him one of the 50 most influential Jews.
Rav Shmuly was ordained as a rabbi at Yeshivat Chovevei Torah. He earned a master's degree at Harvard University in leadership and psychology and a second master’s in Jewish philosophy at Yeshiva University.
