The Rambam’s Remarkable Correspondence with the Scholars of Lunel with Rabbi Charles Sheer

Recorded February 8, 2023

Rabbi Sheer studies the grand Iggeret (Epistle) Rambam wrote to Provencal scholars in which he communicated, in a most personal and revealing fashion, his ideological struggle between his love for Torah study and “hokhmah” (philosophy, wisdom).

Rabbi Charles Sheer published an annotated translation of Rambam’s letter to the Lunel scholars in 2019. He served as Jewish Chaplain at Columbia University and Barnard College for 34. He holds an M.A. in Talmudic Literature from Bernard Revel Graduate School and Ordination from RIETS. He studied for many years with Dr. David Weiss-Halivni.

Rabbi Sheer’s annotated translation of Rambam’s letter to the Lunel scholars is available on Amazon here.

A pdf of the letter presented during the webinar is available here.
